Camping with Chief Man Many Trees

On July 18-24, Grey Eagle and Hawk Dancing visited Chief Man Many Trees. We camped in Cherokee National Forest next to the Tellico River. Chief, White Horse, as well as Chief Grey Smoke and Buffalo Heart of the Georgia Longhair Clan were already in camp when we got there. Grey Smoke and Buffalo Heart left for home the next day.

Hawk Dancing turned out to be quite the wood cutter-upper, at least when he wasn't visiting the girls in the campsite down the road, or playing video games.
There was some scenery to be enjoyed, and I think the young-un did actually see some before we left for home.

During our stay, we went to see Whitehorse's house where we plan to have the September 2009 Gathering. We also stopped at the museum in Tellico Plains (I recommend you see it, if you haven't), and made a run or two to the nearby store.

On Monday (I think), Spirit Hunter visited us. We chatted about his military plans before he had to leave.

The Chief brought his new puppy, Socks, along. She went from full speed ahead to snooze surprisingly quickly. As you can see, both man and dog caught a few naps during the day.

This young man wandered into camp later in the week with a bag of vegetables to give us, and quickly showed Hawk Dancing how to catch crawdads and where to find fish. It turns out he has a lot of Cherokee ancestry. By Thursday, we had met another family who wandered over, and the lady was very interested in her own Cherokee heritage. They all decided to join the Nation, and Chief performed a naming ceremony that night. The young man pictured is Walks Like a Bear. The couple were Mountain Buffalo (dad), Woman Brown Star (mom), and Little Yellow Flower (daughter). (Notice, the Chief's puppy found another place to nap.)

Chief commented there weren't any pictures of Grey Eagle taken so far, so he tried to stay in focus while one of our visitors snapped this picture.
White Horse had to leave earlier, but he returned with Yellow Feather and a truckload of firewood.
Speaking of White Horse, he has made a flag for the Overhill Nation. This design is what Chief Man Many Trees had in mind originally for the Nation's seal.

The Florida Wolf Clan contingent (Grey Eagle and Hawk Dancing) headed back home on Friday morning. They went through North Carolina because Hawk Dancing wanted to see more of that state. Here is a quick stop they made on the way home.
